    Work Out Your Profit!

    🤔

    What is Profit?

Profit is the money you get to KEEP after paying for everything!

It's YOUR reward for running a business 💪
    See a worked example

    Worked example: a cupcake stand

    Sales income (revenue): 20 cupcakes x £3.00
    £60.00
    Costs: 20 cupcakes x £1.20 ingredients & packaging
    - £24.00
    Profit (what you keep)
    £36.00

Illustrative figures. Profit is not the same as revenue: revenue is all the money that comes in (£60.00); profit is what is left after costs (£36.00). Your own numbers will differ.

    How to use Profit Calculator

Profit Calculator is a practical business activity for Pioneers (9-11). It helps young people work on money & finance by making something useful, rather than only reading about the subject. Ka-ching! See exactly how much money you can make with visual maths. The activity takes about 12 minutes, although it is fine to pause, discuss an answer and come back later.

Start with a real idea, even if it is rough. A cake stall, dog-walking service, craft product or digital project is easier to think about than an imaginary company. Work through the tool one question at a time and use short, honest answers. There is no need to make the idea sound impressive. The useful part is noticing what is clear, what still needs thought and what could be tested with a real customer.

What to do with your result

When the first version is finished, read it back aloud and choose one thing to improve. That might mean checking a price, asking someone what they would buy, making the offer easier to explain or reducing the cost of a first test. Save or photograph the result if the tool offers an export, then try the related activity below. Small changes based on evidence are more valuable than trying to make a perfect plan at the first attempt.

    For parents and educators

Parents and educators can help by asking simple questions instead of supplying the answers: Who is this for? What problem does it solve? What would it cost? How could you test it safely? Let the young person make the final choices. The aim is to build confidence and judgement, not to produce adult-level work. You can use it free without creating an account.
