What Ruka Hair does

Tendai Moyo grew up in Zimbabwe and moved to the UK with a clear mission: to build brands for people the beauty industry had long overlooked. She co-founded Ruka Hair to create hair extensions that actually match natural curls and coils, solving a problem she experienced firsthand. Ruka - meaning 'doing hair' - became the UK's number one Afro hair extensions brand and the first Black-owned hair extension brand to launch in Selfridges. With a background at Bain and a seat on the British Beauty Council advisory board, Tendai is proving that products built by and for under-served communities can reshape the mainstream.

Superpower: Purpose-Led Vision

"My dream is to make brands for the underserved consumer - the consumer who looks just like me."

What a young person can learn from this

  • A real business in fashion & beauty started with a specific problem, not a perfect plan.
  • Purpose-Led Vision is a skill you can practise, not something you are born with.
  • How product & service development shows up in a real business.
  • How branding & marketing shows up in a real business.
  • How growth & scaling shows up in a real business.

Try this

Talk about it: Who is this brand for, and what would make someone choose it over a cheaper option?

Then do it: Sketch a product idea for one specific person you know, then name the one thing that makes it different.
