What Mimica does

Solveiga was studying design at Brunel University when she learned that a third of all food gets thrown away – often because people just follow 'use by' dates that aren't always accurate. She thought: what if the label itself could tell you when food has really gone off? She invented Mimica Touch – a gel-based label that changes texture as food spoils, so you can feel whether it's still fresh. Her idea won multiple awards and she built Mimica to bring it to market. Now her technology is helping major food brands reduce waste and keep people safer.

Superpower: Turning science into simple solutions

"Solveiga proves that one smart idea – backed by real science and real determination – can change an entire industry."

What a young person can learn from this

  • A real business in tech & innovation started with a specific problem, not a perfect plan.
  • Turning science into simple solutions is a skill you can practise, not something you are born with.
  • How product & service development shows up in a real business.
  • How sustainability shows up in a real business.
  • How entrepreneurial mindset shows up in a real business.

Try this

Talk about it: What problem came first - the idea, or noticing something that did not work?

Then do it: Write down three things that annoyed you this week, then pick the one most people would pay to fix.
